Workshop
Newcastle University
The UK-iGEM meet-up is quickly becoming a staple of the iGEM calendar! The aim is to allow iGEM teams to get to know each other and discuss their projects-in-progress. This year, 8 out of 9 UK iGEM teams turned up to the meeting in Newcastle. Through short and lively presentations, we heard about the work of the Aberdeen, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Sheffield, St Andrews, and UCL teams.
Team-building efforts on Day 1 concentrated on keeping an egg as high off the ground as possible using spaghetti, wooden skewers and marshmallows, and on dodging torrential raindrops through Newcastle city centre en route to dinner...
On Day 2, the teams were up bright and early to receive top tips from veteran iGEM advisor Chris French; hear from Matthew Robinson about the trials, tribulations and triumphs of the Newcastle 2009 iGEM team; and discuss questions around biosafety and human practices with Jane Calvert, Emma Frow, and invited expert Brian Crook from the Health & Safety Laboratory. (Presentations are available to download from the links below.)
Good luck to all the teams with their exciting projects!
