SynBioStandards network member Jane Calvert has just published a paper focused on intellectual property in systems and synthetic biology.

In this article, Jane discusses commodification and intellectual property in systems biology and synthetic biology. She argues that patenting suits entities that are discrete and isolable, which raises challenges for disciplines like systems biology that focus on more integrative and emergent phenomena. Jane suggests that synthetic biology is in principle well-suited to commodification, and draws our attention to the ways in which ideas of property are shaping the course of research in biology.
