40th Anniversary of the RFC

The 'Request for Comments' or RFC celebrates its 40th birthday this week.

Originally developed by computer scientists interested in defining network protocols for information exchange over computers, the RFC process for proposing standards has played a crucial role in developing and shaping the Internet.

An article in the New York Times (7 April 2009) by Stephen D. Crocker, author of the first RFC, offers a personal reflection on the development of this community resource.

The synthetic biology community is adopting a similar model for proposing standards, with community RFCs hosted on the BioBricks Foundation website.
