The growing 'DIYbio' movement in the US was recently profiled in The Guardian (19 March 2009). The article quotes enthusiasts and skeptics of DIYbio - what do you think?
DIYbio is a growing movement, mostly US-based, of 'citizen scientists' looking to get involved with biological engineering.
Part of the motivation for developing a DIYbio community comes from researchers who feel that biology and the tools of biological engineering should be made widely available. This initiative raises some interesting questions. Should biological research be 'democratized', or should it be confined to the laboratories of research institutes and private companies? Should special training be required before embarking on biological engineering projects? Would some form of regulation be important for DIYbio activities? Would this be possible??
